For eye-care and ophthalmology practices in Kolkata

Digital Marketing For Eye Hospitals & Eye Surgeons In Kolkata, Built Around The NMC Rules

Ophthalmologists, eye hospitals and eye-care clinics need to explain investigations, procedures, equipment and costs without creating unrealistic expectations about vision. The NMC's Public Notice No. R-13014/01/2024-Ethics, dated 6 October 2026, sets boundaries for medical advertising and public communication. For eye care, that makes the difference between patient education and promised results especially important.

Medmatis is an NMC-compliant healthcare digital marketing agency in Kolkata: our work is built around the National Medical Commission's 2026 guidelines. Here is how those rules apply to eye-care and ophthalmology practices, and what we do about them.

The short answer

Eye-care practices can publish factual service information and non-promotional eye-health education. Avoid outcome promises, promotional before-and-after images, misleading device claims and offers that encourage unnecessary care.

What patients ask before they choose

What are the early signs of cataracts?Cataract symptoms and their significance vary. An education page can describe general signs and explain that an eye examination is needed for assessment. Avoid alarming language or suggesting every symptom means surgery (cl. 5.1; cl. 8.1 i).
Is LASIK eye surgery suitable for everyone? No procedure suits everyone. Explain that suitability depends on assessment and that an ophthalmologist can discuss benefits, risks and alternatives. Avoid guaranteeing freedom from spectacles or implying a result is assured (cl. 8.1 iii, vi).
How long does recovery after eye surgery take?Recovery depends on the procedure and the person. A page can explain that the treating ophthalmologist gives procedure-specific instructions and follow-up. Avoid fixed recovery promises or wording that makes surgery sound risk-free (cl. 8.1 vi).
Where can I get an eye examination in Kolkata?Patients need practical information: address, contact details, consultation arrangements, opening hours and the eye-care services available. Keep it accurate and up to date across the website and local listings (cl. 8.3, 9.1).
What should I ask before choosing an eye surgeon?Patients can ask about qualifications, registration, experience with the proposed procedure, risks, alternatives, costs and follow-up. Present it as decision support, not a claim that one practitioner is better than others (cl. 8.1 ix).
What does an eye procedure usually cost?Cost depends on the procedure, investigations and what the fee includes. A practice can publish clear, factual fees or explain how to request an estimate, without misleading discounts or pressure (cl. 8.1 x).

The NMC rules that matter most for eye-care and ophthalmology practices

The notice binds doctors and hospitals, and an agency does not remove that responsibility (cl. 4.4). These are the clauses we design around.

Not allowed Avoid promises about vision outcomesClause 8.1 iii names "100% success" and guaranteed cures among barred claims, and 8.1 vi bars unrealistic expectations. A claim such as "100% spectacle-free" falls squarely here. Explain that suitability and results vary, and never present a desired outcome as assured or universal.
Allowed with care Describe equipment factuallyClause 3.2, Explanation II, allows factual information on equipment and diagnostic facilities, without superiority, guaranteed accuracy or outcomes, or comparisons. Clause 8.1 iv bars device endorsements tied to the doctor's name or status. Do not claim a device is superior or makes a procedure risk-free.
Not allowed No before-and-after results as promotionClause 8.1 v bars before-and-after photos and promotional surgical results, and clause 6.2 says consent alone does not make them acceptable. Use explanatory diagrams or general educational illustrations instead, and protect identifiable patient information (cl. 6.1, 7.4).
Allowed with care Review camps, discounts and inducementsClause 8.1 x bars discounts, gifts and free procedures likely to encourage unnecessary care or amount to solicitation. Do not assume a free eye camp is automatically permitted or automatically barred. Have the purpose, wording, eligibility and promotion reviewed before publication.
Allowed with care Keep education separate from solicitationClause 5.1 allows health education that does not promote the practice or solicit patients. Eye-health education can help people understand common conditions and prepare questions for a clinician. Keep it balanced, without fear-based messaging, exaggerated urgency or unproven claims (cl. 8.1 i, vi).
Your responsibility Keep factual practice information accuratePublish accurate details of the clinic, services, contact methods and practitioners. Electronic posts about doctors must show name, qualifications and registration details (cl. 3.2, Explanations III and IV). Under clause 4.4, the doctor stays responsible even when an agency helps prepare the content.

What to publish, and what to leave out

Do

  • Explain what an eye examination may involve
  • Publish accurate procedure and fee information
  • Describe equipment without superiority claims
  • Show verified practitioner credentials

Don't

  • Promise spectacle-free vision or guaranteed results
  • Use surgical before-and-after images as promotion
  • Imply a device guarantees better outcomes
  • Promote eye camps with pressure or inducements
What we won't do

We will not write guaranteed-vision claims, unsupported "best eye hospital" language, misleading equipment comparisons or promotional before-and-after stories. We will not use fear to push patients towards an eye procedure or treat every free camp as automatically acceptable. Claims and offers are flagged for review, not presented as cleared. We never price our work per patient or per enquiry (cl. 8.1 vii, viii).

Read our guide to the rules and how we approach them.

Questions from eye-care and ophthalmology practices

Can an eye clinic advertise LASIK as a spectacle-free procedure?

Not as a guaranteed outcome. A clinic can explain LASIK and the factors an ophthalmologist considers when assessing suitability. Avoid promises that every patient will become spectacle-free. Clause 8.1 iii names "100% success" among barred claims and 8.1 vi bars unrealistic expectations. Have procedure claims reviewed by the ophthalmologist.

Can we mention the brand or model of an eye-care machine?

A factual mention needs careful review. Clause 3.2, Explanation II, allows factual information on equipment, and clause 8.1 iv bars endorsing devices tied to the doctor's name, photograph, voice or status. Keep the description accurate and do not imply a device guarantees better results; comparative or endorsement claims need particular scrutiny.

Can we organise a free eye-check-up camp?

Do not assume every free camp is permitted. Clause 8.1 x bars offers and free procedures likely to encourage unnecessary care or amount to solicitation, so purpose, eligibility, services, publicity and follow-up all matter. Where the format is unclear, take legal advice instead of treating a public-service label as permission.

Can an ophthalmologist post patient surgery results on social media?

Not as promotional before-and-after material. Clause 8.1 v bars it, and clause 6.2 says consent alone does not make promotional patient material acceptable. Use general educational explanations, diagrams or non-identifiable illustrations, and protect patient identity across posts and videos (cl. 6.1, 7.4).

Can SEO help patients find an eye-care clinic in Kolkata?

Yes. The notice does not bar search optimisation; clause 8.1 xii bars fake engagement and manipulating rankings to create a misleading impression, and 8.1 ix bars unsupported superiority claims. Search pages should accurately describe services, credentials and contact details, and promise neither outcomes nor rankings.
