Ethics & Compliance
Marketing that stays inside NMC and advertising guidelines.
How do I choose an NMC-compliant healthcare marketing agency?
Choose a healthcare marketing agency that understands the NMC's ethical advertising guidelines, can explain relevant clauses and has a clear content-review process. No agency can promise guaranteed compliance or NMC certification. Doctors remain responsible for content an agency publishes on their behalf (cl. 4.4).
Is SEO banned for doctors under the NMC's 2026 guidelines?
SEO as such is not banned for doctors. The NMC's 2026 guidelines prohibit manipulating search rankings, visibility or algorithms to create a misleading impression. Promotional search communication remains subject to the other rules (cl. 8.1 xii; 3.2).
What are the penalties for violating the NMC advertising guidelines?
The NMC's 2026 notice sets out a disciplinary sequence from warning and ethics training to censure, monetary penalty, suspension and possible removal from the register. The notice describes a State Medical Council process and appeal periods (cl. 10.1 to 10.3; 11). The outcome depends on the applicable process and findings.
Can doctors use AI-generated content under the NMC guidelines?
AI-generated promotional campaigns for commercial interest are prohibited under the NMC's 2026 guidelines. AI must not create patient images, voices, testimonials or outcomes. AI-generated promotional content that otherwise complies must carry an AI source mark; labelling does not make a prohibited campaign acceptable (cl. 7.2).
Are before-and-after photos allowed under the NMC guidelines?
The NMC's 2026 guidelines bar before-and-after material when used to promote medical services. Scientific or educational use is treated differently and requires anonymised patient consent. Consent alone does not make promotional use acceptable (cl. 8.1 v; 6.2).
Can doctors offer discounts or packages under the NMC guidelines?
The NMC's 2026 guidelines do not ban every discount or package. They prohibit discounts, coupons, gifts and free procedures when they are likely to encourage unnecessary care or amount to solicitation. Factual, transparent fee disclosure is permitted (cl. 8.1 x).
Can doctors use patient testimonials under the NMC's 2026 guidelines?
Doctors must not request or share patient testimonials or reviews for promotion on social media. Fake, paid or misleading reviews and testimonials are barred for doctors and hospitals. Patient consent alone does not make a testimonial acceptable (cl. 3.2 Expl. V; 6.2; 8.1 xi).
What can a hospital or clinic website say under the NMC guidelines?
The NMC's 2026 guidelines permit factual hospital information, including names, locations, departments, facilities, services, emergency services, accreditation and charges. Doctor directories may include names, qualifications, specialities, registration details and availability. Promotional website content remains subject to the other rules (cl. 3.2; 8.3; 9.1).
What can doctors post on social media and WhatsApp under the NMC guidelines?
Doctors may communicate public health education under the NMC's stated conditions, but must avoid prohibited promotion, solicitation and testimonial use. Electronic posts should show the doctor's name, qualifications, registration status and registration number. The content's purpose and context matter (cl. 5.1; 8.1 ii; 8.2 iii; 3.2 Expl. III, IV).
